For sga_saturday challenge #7: Launch

(May I get an author tag, please?)

John lay in bed, looking up at the ceiling. He had left messages that he wouldn't be in today, or tomorrow. Erring on the side of caution seemed like a good idea. Being a Thursday made it easier, he wouldn't have to face anyone until Monday.

His bladder finally forced him to crawl out of bed and he decided he might as well take a shower while he still felt up to it. He wasn't going anywhere but a long, hot shower would kill some time. His fingers pruned up about the same time the water started to run luke-warm. He dried off roughly, decided not to shave and walked naked back to the bedroom. He drew on track pants and a t-shirt over still-damp skin.

Wandering into the kitchen, he made coffee, figuring he'd get a decent start to the day. Not feeling up to making anything for breakfast, he had corn flakes with milk and a hint of sugar. A second bowl went down easily. Leaving the dishes in the sink, he wandered to the living room with a cup of coffee in hand.

Flipping through the channels, he settled on CNN. It was too early in the day for anything but talk shows and soaps on the other channels although he was tempted to break into his stash of NFL films. He decided to save them for later. If he was up to watching anything by then.

He looked over at the books and journals spread on the desk. Maybe he could do some homework, he did have that paper due early next week. But he didn't stir from the couch.

It was his bladder again that made him move. On his way back to the couch he grabbed a glass, a bowl of ice and the bottle of really good bourbon he had bought for the occasion. He dropped some ice into the glass and cracked the seal on the bottle.

It was like everyone knew. The sympathy was almost unbearable.

"Colonel Sheppard, are you sure about this?" Everyone asked, almost the exact same words and tone. Woolsey, Landry, even O'Neill. Although O'Neill was the only one who only asked once and seemed to understand.

"If you ever change your mind..." It was a sincere offer from Woolsey and O'Neill. From Landry it was a formality.

Jennifer Keller was a beautiful bride. Rodney had eyes for no one but her and only fumbled a bit when he slipped the ring on her finger.

As best man, John gave the toast to the newlyweds. Because they were in Wisconsin, he couldn't give the type of toast he could have in Pegasus. On the other hand, that was even better since he could keep it short. He knew they'd understand.

Teyla and Ronon stuck close by him all day. They were in the wedding party, which made it easier. John had arranged for a limo to take them back to the hotel after the reception, so they could enjoy the party and relax. John drank water all night, he never did relax.

David directed him to the new family lawyers and, when they were done, John had access to the trust fund from their grandmother, his share of the inheritance and his back combat pay. He was pretty sure Sam Carter used some influence to get him enrolled in the PhD program in Mathematics at MIT with a minimum of fuss. They even offered him an assistantship but he turned that down, knowing he could afford to pay his own way. He didn't feel up to the responsibility that would go with it, just yet.

The real estate lady had found him a condo on the ocean. He had her furnish it, which may have been a mistake since she picked out everything in greens and blues. But, like the sound of the water from his balcony, he soon found it soothing.

He never answered the cell phone, letting it drop into voice mail, and it soon stopped ringing. He emptied the voice mail without listening to it. John didn't know if he wanted to keep the email messages or not. He compromised by setting up a filter so they'd go into a subfolder that he never looked at.

He got one email from Radek that he did open. The entire message consisted of a date and time. Looking at a calendar he found it was a Thursday afternoon.

John had worked his way steadily through almost half of the bottle by the time the news story caught his attention.

We're going to Nathalie Bending who is live in San Francisco.... Nathalie, what can you tell us?

Well, Steve, there was a huge disturbance in the Bay just a few minutes ago. As you know, the Bay has been closed down and heavily guarded by the military for just over six months. It was declared an emergency area by Homeland Security and a potential disaster site but we never got any details.

Reports from eyewitnesses make it sound like something underneath the Bay forced thousands of gallons of water high into the air before the water fell back down. An underwater explosion is at the top of list of possibilities. While most of the water fell back into the Bay, many of the surrounding areas were inundated and we're waiting on further information on damages and to learn if there are any casualties.

We have obtained a home video from an eyewitness....

John closed his eyes, faintly aware of the dampness on his face, seeing in his head how Atlantis would rise from the Bay and clear Earth's atmosphere before opening a hyperspace window and heading home.....

He took another long swallow of the drink and slumped sideways on the couch. Maybe he could sleep....

Jul. 24th, 2011 04:20 am (UTC)
Oh my goodness. I don't know if there is anything more sad that John picturing Atlantis taking off from earth and LEAVING HIM BEHIND. This is just heartbreaking.

I love the route nature of his actions, taking a shower, making coffee, one thing at a time. OH John.
