Title: Like thunder
Author: sharpes_hussy
Rating: G
Prompt: orange
Summary: The team stepped out of a gate to a sky of orange

When they stepped out of the gate, the sky was an amazing array of deep orange hues, but instead of appreciating it, McKay began to ramble on about how it reminded him of how allergic he was to citrus.

Ronon quipped, “I thought it is lemons you are allergic to,” and then chuckled when he saw Teyla roll her eyes.

As Sheppard moved through the deep vegetation, he remembered Afghanistan and the incredible hues in the morning and at sunset.

He recalled the first time he had experienced the brilliance of a sunrise. They were returning from a sortie when it hit him full face, blinding him momentarily, forcing him to pull his visor.
It was eerie as it moved into the cockpit, bathing everything it touched in shades of deep orange, but at same time ethereal.

At the time he wondered if it might fit the maritime mantra:

Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning.

Granted, it had not been red, but...

And what was it that Ruyard Kipling had penned in Mandalay, 'an' the dawn comes up like thunder'?

This was orange, but. . .

Then he was brought back to the present and McKay's ramblings about citrus.

Oooh, I love your description of John experiencing the sunrise in Afghanistan. That's just utterly lovely. (And so much orange! Whee!)

Thank you
The prompts have been very interesting............

Man you are quick!!
This was gorgous though, that discription of the sunlight moving through the cockpit bathing everyone in it's eerie light.

I must say I always prefer the comedy version of that old saying though and it's kind of apt here too...

"Red sky in the moring Shepherd take warning! Red sky at night, Shepherd's hut alight!!"

too true.......

Well, you are the speedy writer...your muse is much more decisive than mine...I ran through a litany of orange plots...still thinking...

Loved this, a look into Sheppard's private thoughts that he always kept to himself. Really nice....And of course, Rodney rambling about citrus...how perfect.

Great story...

I believe him to be a much deeper thinker than some credit him.

I love the linking memories. And, of course, Teyla rolling her eyes at Rodney! Good use of the prompt, too. Very visual.

I could not resist taking a shot at McKay and his citrus

Lovely imagery hon. Love the harking back to John's days in the desert.

The desert has a way of capturing the imagination..........

Well done! Nice to get a glimpse into Sheps thoughts and how he was able to find one good memory of Afghanistan.

I think that is what defines him in my mind.
There is a lot that he has not shared. He protects his privacy......

Reading John's thoughts reminds me of Joe F's comments at a con about his wife asking him what he was thinking about it....and saying that for most guys the honest answer is something like...cheeseburgers or football or cars!
So here, Sheppard's thoughts are deeper and more interesting. Mmmm, indside Sheppard's head...well I don't mind going there....or outside on his body if he wants!!!! Thanks for sharing his thoughts with us.
Good use of the prompt word hon.

Thank you.
It is my feeling, that Sheppard is a lot deeper than some think
They take his nonchalant air as his entirety, but that is NOT my take.
He covers and protects his feelings
At least that is my take on him.

I really liked this insular moment of John's thoughts amidst the chatter of his team. Nicely done.

Thank you. I like considering what he may be thinking when
he is just in a moment of his own..........
I used to do that when there was a lot of chaos around me.
I kept my eye on what was happening, but would detach myself in
If that makes any sense.....

Yay, the thinky thought of John. :-)

Paying attention to the current crisis but always in thought too...
