Week 16 Fic: Sense Memory

Title: Sense Memory
Rating: PG
Pairing: John/Rodney,
Summary: Sense memory's a funny thing.
Prompt: Week 16: memory
Word Count: 376 (Inorite! so short *sad face*)
Notes: My mind immediately jumped to this concept, and I spent a few days hashing out how and why it went there. This is what came of that. Beta'd by the lovely hoktauri who streamlined some tough bits and whipped them into the shape I wanted. Thank you, bebe! *smooch*

Sense memory's a funny thing.

Rolling over after a night's deep sleep and, even before total consciousness, your body curls into the warmth of the other person in your bed. Arms snake under sleep-heavy flesh and pull it closer as your face buries itself in the muted heat of soft hair.

There's nothing deliberate about it, nothing in the brain that says, "Slide your arms under him slowly; you know how he gets if he's woken up before he's ready." No thought that flutters across your semi-conscious mind and says, "Curl into that heat; you know you want to." There's just the muscle memory of a thousand mornings, limbs trained by experience to do this one thing that is the only perfect moment in the course of the day.

Mainly because there's always some emergency in a ten thousand year old city—called over the comm to the 'gate room for an unscheduled off world activation, and that'll ruin the start of the day, for sure. You'll roll out of bed to pull on the BDUs left on the floor the night before right before you shove your feet into loose boots with no socks because Woolsey needs help right the hell now and damn it, no it can't wait.

Or, god forbid, he gets called to the lab or the ZPM room, and he's grousing the entire time, bitching about intellectually-deficient scientists that don't know their asses from an Arcturus device and why the hell did the SGC send him such grossly incompetent people again?

So your body takes this moment, without permission or even knowledge, because it knows that this is what gets a man through the day. This breath, inhaling the sleep scent of his hair; this movement, curling arms around his chest as your body conforms to his; this peace, belonging to a place and a partner when you never thought you'd give yourself completely to someone without fear.

Then he, still asleep, pushes into your warmth, murmurs something incomprehensible that filters into your senses. His hand covers yours on his stomach, squeezes your fingers. Then he sighs, and it settles you both.

It's a blessing to have a place to call home, finally; it's bliss to have someone sharing it with you.

*squee*!! This was even more beautiful re-reading it and you've got me all smiles over here! Your writing makes me so happy, and allowing me to beta your AWESOME work reminds me of all the reasons I write and read this stuff to start with.

This was just lovely, and I was hoping someone would pick up the sense/muscle memory aspect of the prompt. You handled it beautifully, love. I'd say it's a blessing to have a fandom to call home, and bliss to have writers like you to share it with! *^__^*

:D Thank you so much for the beta read! I get stuck with what I want to say and can't get the words out the way I want, and then you come along and whip it into shape. Also, you were totally right. There needed to be that reciprocation at the end.

So it's only as good as it is becaue you helped me with it! :D

Aww, you are too sweet! You are quite welcome for the beta read, anytime. All the awesome comes from you, I just encourage it a little, and I'm glad you trust me with your amazing fics! I am glad to see all these beautiful comments for your work!

And I agree, that reciprocation added so much, it was *perfect*. It made me feel all warm and snuggly, and I wasn't the only one, I see...

Can't wait for your next piece! (Whether I beta or not. ;-)

Beautiful writing.

And, this is what gets a man through the day ... belonging to a place and a partner when you never thought you'd give yourself completely to someone without fear. is a wonderful sentiment. John's a lucky guy.

It's all that John/Rodney body heat! hehe. Or just that predawn moment when the body's all sleepy and limp and warm. Thanks so much for reading and I'm glad you liked it. :)

Loved the quiet, sleepy beauty of this! John knows just how to insure that he and Rodney can make through their hectic lives, by savoring each other in this quiet time of the early morning/night. :)

Even when they're unconscious, their bodies know how to take that moment. It's almost autonomic.

So glad you liked it! Thank you for reading. :)
