Backing up to Dreamwidth

All: I'm planning to back up the contents of sga_saturday to a community of the same name on Dreamwidth to preserve the contents of our community in the event that something should happen (*cough* censorship) due to the illegality of some of our works under the current laws of Russia (in June 2013, a federal law criminalizing the distribution of materials among minors in support of "non-traditional" sexual relationships, was enacted as an amendment to an existing child protection law). Seeing as the LJ servers have recently been moved there, this is a real concern.

Please let me know if you are a contributor to this community and have any concerns about having your content backed up to DW.

I'll give it a week before I proceed.

No issues at all - but I'd love it if the community maybe did a new challenge every once in a while once we're settled in? :)

that is a brilliant idea. it's time for a new challenge! :)

Heh. I just redid my back-up of Sentinel Thursday to DW, so purely as a reader of this comm I am inclined to think think this a good idea.

sweet, thanks for the thumbs up. and I'm glad to hear you're doing that! I have stories on sentinel_thurs, obvsly. :D

tell me: do you periodically just go in and re-run the import and that backs up the latest postings?

Yeah. Once you've done an import DW keeps a record of it, and you can go in and redo as needed. I'd been a bit slack about my backup, so the current fuss was a good reminder and it went smoothly enough once I figured out a couple of settings. I suspect you're more tech savvy than me, so you should find it a doddle.

Cool beans, thanks!

I've no content on the comm but I wanted to let you know how glad I am that you made this decision. Really, really glad!

Now I hope that other comm-admins get the same idea - storyfinder, genrefinder, the rec-comms ...

Having these and other comms possibly disappear one day without warning would feel like a fandom-catastrophe to me. :-(

Thanks for the support, pat! I hope so as well.

Um, sorry for raining on your parade but the content would still be gone. All the old links (especially before the AO3 existed) will be broken/dead ends should LJ/the accounts ever go away...

A lot of the old links are already broken, what with personal websites and LJs disappearing and content being moved to AO3. What matters to these comms--genrefinders and storyfinders--are the questions and answers. Anyone reading back through can do a simple search to find the current home of the fic in question, if it's still on the Internet. If not, a new post asking to share the fic is easy enough.

We're resourceful people; nothing is truly lost if we have just a clue to find it.

I came here to say... well, everything that patk already wrote, actually. It would break my heart to lose the years of creativity & love & joy & growth that LJ holds, both in individual journals & in communities. Thank you for being proactive with this one! <3

Thanks for the thumbs up. It would break my heart, too. There are so many comms out there that I hope are backed up somehow...I'll hop on this next weekend and also put up a new prompt!

Cool bananas, and thank you kindly!

You're welcome, but really, I don't want to lose access to all these awesome works. :)

To be honest, I'm not happy with my content from this community going over to DW. If I want it at DW, I'm posting/commenting there.

I realize that I'm in the minority (and people won't care) and you'll still import it over there (I loathe the fact that they made it possible to import communities) but if there is a way to leave my content out of it, please do so.

Thank you.

I'm sorry if my post was confusing: the community isn't moving to DW. I'm just backing up the data there in case LJ deletes our content because some of our works are in violation of Russian child protection laws.

I don't see any work tags for your userid so I assume you mean your comments. In which case, after the import you can of course go in under openid and delete your comments. They are your words. No one wants to take away your control over them. We're just backing everything up.

I hope that clarifies and I'm sorry you're unhappy, but I'm an archivist and a data technician and this is a real risk. I don't want to lose years of a thriving community because of censorship. This is our SGA fandom history. I don't want us to lose it. Your comments are of course part of it and I don't want to lose them either, but if you feel the medium makes a difference, it's up to you. Just know that your openid gives you control. Okay?

Um, moving all the content to DW is not moving the comm to DW? What is it then? *scratches head*

Oh, I have a fic here. You just never found it necessary to create a tag for me. *shrugs*

And yes, I mainly mean my comments here. I know that OpenID gives me somewhat control over them but that still doesn't change the fact that my fic and comments show up on a platform where I don't want them to be.

Why should I go to a platform I don't like/am uncomfortable with (and to be clear, since the move I'm uncomfortable on LJ too), create an open ID with them/claim my open ID there and delete my stuff? It's your job as a mod to either not import/transfer such content or delete it when it's not possible to not import/transfer it. Especially when it's pointed out to you. That's the job of a mod.

You as the creator were supposed to request an author/artist tag with your first work (and a tag for any new pairings). If I missed your request, I'm sorry. But I worked really hard as a mod of the comm to respond to everyone's needs, so the sarcasm, and the implication I somehow played favorites, is astonishingly hurtful. There are no favorites in this comm. Please indicate what story you wrote so I can add your tag.

Also, I never used the word moving. That's you repeating that word for some reason. Moving implies deletion of the original. We are only copying or backing up the data, and are leaving the original intact. This LJ comm will still be the primary location for the comm and I will be doing regular backups (monthly, probably) so keep that in mind if you don't want any new content to end up on DW in the future.

Data backups are a way of life. You haven't said why you dislike DW, but whatever the reason, this is our only option for backing up our comm for free (and with ease).

Anyway, once you tell me your story URL, I will proceed with the backup and then delete your story from it. Regarding your comments, you should have total control via openid. But you are free to do a mass delete on all your comments here on LJ before the transfer if you prefer. Then they won't be transferred at all. I think it would be a terrible waste and a loss and leave holes in the conversation, but I don't want you to be uncomfortable.

That's the only simple solution the technology offers. I'm sorry it's causing you so much woe.

Woha, I'm stepping away from this.

Don't worry. Everything has been deleted. Comments in this post will be deleted tomorrow or so.
Jan. 9th, 2017 01:36 am (UTC)
I'm sorry. That's not the outcome I'd hoped for.
